Many offenders who have committed severely violent crimes seem to go through similar phases following their conviction. Early on, they express deep denial and anger, and for some, shock that they have come to prison. As time passes, their angry denial may be replaced by a kind of resignation, and as more time passes, by a growing acknowledgment of what they have done. Typically, this might take five or ten years, and for some, it never happens.
